Analysis: The Braves say the operation was a success and Markakis should be able to resume baseball activities before spring training in late February, though the expected eight-week recovery period leaves little room for setbacks. The 31-year-old was diagnosed with the condition before the 2013 season with the Orioles. He left to sign a $44 million, four-year contract with the Braves, who felt the neck condition was not a serious risk.
|Dec. 3 5:25 PM PT6:25 PM MT7:25 PM CT8:25 PM ET20:25 ET1:25 GMT9:25 6:25 PM MST8:25 PM EST8:55 PM VEN5:25 UAE (+1)7:25 PM CT-Markakis and the Atlanta Braves have agreed to a four-year contract, pending a physical. The team announced the move Wednesday night.
Analysis: The 31-year-old Markakis spent the first nine years of his career with the Baltimore Orioles. This past season, he batted .276 with 14 homers and 50 RBIs. Markakis fills a void left by the recent trade of right fielder Jason Heyward to St. Louis. Also, it will surely step up talks on a potential deal for slugger Justin Upton, who is entering the final year of his contract, or perhaps Evan Gattis, who could move from catcher to left field if he stays in Atlanta.
